Headquartered in Menlo Park, CA, Lex Machina provides legal analytics to law firms and companies, enabling them to craft successful litigation strategies, win cases, and close business. After launching in 2011 with a focus on patent litigation, our startup expanded to other areas of intellectual property before being acquired by LexisNexis in 2015. Since acquisition we have expanded rapidly to cover many other areas of the law, with the support and stability of our parent company while continuing to operate as a small, tight-knit team.
We are looking for a Principal NLP Engineer / Data Scientist who has a background in NLP and information extraction. Ideal candidates will bring machine learning (including deep learning) experience that will be applied to some of our toughest problems. Additionally, it’s important that this individual have a strong software engineering background and track record of building products.
The NLP team at Lex Machina is responsible for the quality and accuracy of the data that drives our product. Our critical systems include:
- Attorney Data Engine, which extracts attorney and law firm information from court-filed PDF documents from courts all across the US. - Counsel normalization system, which uses clustering to create a unified view of each attorney and law firm from all their references across all supported courts. - Motion Metrics, which identifies attorneys and law firms who file court motions and analyzes language to determine the judge ordered outcomes.
We are a Python and Java shop, deploying in GCE (Google Compute Engine). Our RDBMS is Postgres and we also have a large Elasticsearch cluster. Engineers choose their hardware / development environment / tooling, etc.
Ideal candidates will have 10+ years of experience building software products, 5+ years professional experience with NLP, and several years of machine learning / deep learning experience.

Additionally, this person will assist with the building, support and maintenance of dev/test/research labs. A well rounded candidate will have the opportunity to work directly with development, devops and research engineers optimizing and supporting the deployment of code and devices within the labs.
