Quill.org | Software Engineer | Remote | Ruby / Rails / React / Python / Machine Learning
We're hiring: Mid-level and Senior Full-Stack Engineers. Full positions here: https://www.quill.org/careers or email a resume and cover letter to jobs@quill.org.
At Quill.org, we’ve created an online learning platform to help middle school students, primarily lower income ones, improve their reading and writing ability. Our pedagogy is based on years of research that shows that once students understand the logic behind constructing sentences, their ability to read and write improves dramatically. Unlike common multiple-choice-based learning tools, our tools allow students to practice writing sentences and passages in their browser, while still receiving real-time, focused feedback. This is a challenging engineering problem that we use a variety of methods to solve, from simple regex to machine learning.
Some info about Quill.org: - We were named one of Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Education Companies in 2018 - We served over 2 million students last year and are continuing to grow. - In April 2019, we won a grant from Google’s AI for Social Good initiative which provides us with both funding and mentorship from Google’s NLP experts. - We’ve been funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, AT&T, Black Rock, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (to name a few).

Surge AI | Full-Stack Engineers | Remote | Full-Time or Contract | https://surgehq.ai
AI is going to change the world, but the advances of the past few years have been slow to translate into real-world impact. Our mission at Surge is to change that.
We’ve been developing two products: A platform for extremely high-quality data labeling. Think Mechanical Turk 2.0, but with an elite workforce: in order to build models of misinformation and hate speech, for example, we need to leverage skilled workers who understand complex problems. Tools for easily turning data into AI. A machine learning model is defined by its data, so anybody -- from your PM to your marketer to your engineers -- should be able to create ML models just by labeling data points.
We’re a team of ex-Google and Twitter engineers who’ve quickly bootstrapped into very healthy revenue. Reach out to team@surgehq.ai if you’re interested in chatting! Our tech stack is Ruby on Rails, React, and Python, and we’re looking for backend, frontend, and ML engineers, but love talking to talented folks of any types. (We also love personal projects and writings if you have any to share!)

SimplePay | Ruby on Rails Developers | UTC+0 to UTC+8 | REMOTE | USD42k-USD60k
Did you know that developing business software doesn't have to be boring?
At SimplePay, we've brought craftsmanship to payroll software. We love solving thorny business problems with elegant code. That is why I started the company to begin with. This philosophy has brought us 16 000 clients and counting across South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong and Ireland.
Our development team was already mostly remote pre-pandemic.
To find out more about us, check our developer blog (https://tech.simplepay.cloud) or about page (https://www.simplepay.co.za/about)
Do you believe most SPAs are a pile of steaming crap, but wouldn't mind digging into Vue.js for pages that will benefit from the increased interactivity? Do you laugh when people give up the power of PostgreSQL in favour of data stores that don't offer any benefits for their use case? If so, you may fit in well with our mindset.
Experience: Due to our full pipeline, we can only hire developers who have a few years of Rails experience at this time, or highly experienced polyglots who at least know some Ruby. The work is mostly on the back-end, but some front-end skills are welcome.
Location: UTC+0 to UTC+8
Please mail developers+hn@simplepay.cloud to apply. Your resume / CV must be attached in PDF format. Start your email body with the following 2 headers:
Timezone: Your timezone here
PR/Issue: A link to a PR or issue you've logged for an open source project, no matter how small or long ago.

RxRevu is a well-funded digital healthcare startup that offers tools and content for healthcare providers to understand the cost of care for their patients. We've been growing like crazy over the past year, we're in over 300 hospitals with hundreds of thousands of doctors performing millions of price transparency transactions per month.
This is a particularly hard problem in the US Health system and we have great momentum. If you like solving difficult problems that translate to a material improvement in someone's quality of life, e.g. access to a medication they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford, then we should probably talk.
We're cloud centric and use ruby on rails and more recently kotlin for transactional services, and python for data pipeline and other data intense systems. We've been fully distributed since the pandemic struck, most of us were based in the Denver area, but as we've grown in the past half-year we're now open to candidates anywhere inside the USA.
Please check out our careers page as we have many roles currently open! https://rxrevu.com/join-us/
Podigee | VP of Product, Frontend, Devops, Full-stack / Backend, UX/UI (by this order) | Full-time | onsite in Berlin, Germany - mostly home office during pandemic - no full remote | https://www.podigee.com/en/
Podigee provides podcast hosting & analytics to businesses, professionals and ambitious beginners. We have a very strong product that is highly modular and integrates well with established workflows.
We have over 5,000 paying customers and over 10,000 users in total. We run our own CDN which serves over a petabyte of audio data every month. This translates to millions of listeners.
Our vision for podcasting is that it should be an open medium that impacts society and people in a positive way. We are against walled gardens and gatekeepers.
Our main challenge is internal scaling in order to fulfill the growing demands of our current and future customers.
So far we are bootstrapped, profitable, yet preparing for our first fundraise. We have tripled our revenue this year, we want to repeat it next year again.
The two founders (I am one of them) are techies and used to be full-stack software engineers before going full-time with Podigee. Until a couple of years ago, we wrote every single line of code, decided every product feature and did all the networking, marketing, accounting and more ourselves. Today we are getting close to 30 employees, will triple the number next year.
Our tech stack is mainly based on Ruby on Rails, Angular (legacy) & Vue.js (target), PostgresDB, TimescaleDB, lots of infrastructure-as-code.
Feel like you want to work with lots of talented people at a no-BS, performance-driven startup that is not just a moonshot or a fad? This is the best time to join.
Apply here: https://www.podigee.com/en/about/the-team or send an email directly to jobs@podigee.com

Root Insurance | Columbus, OH / Chicago, IL | Full-time | Onsite Preferred/Remote currently | $100k-$160k https://root.engineering/
Root is an auto insurance carrier, like GEICO and Progressive. We use data science to identify and insure good drivers, reducing insurance premiums for good drivers significantly as a result. We're still a startup — today, we're ~1,000 people who have been working on this since March 2015. We've built an iOS and Android app that gathers data on how well people drive. We use that to set insurance prices. To build the best possible product and user experience, we went through the arduous process of starting an insurance carrier from scratch with fairness in mind.
We're focused on becoming a national insurance carrier and are now live in 30+ states. We've also successfully launched both a renters and homeowners product and an Enterprise arm of our core business, all in the last year.
We've raised the largest VC round ever for an Ohio technology company and we're scaling rapidly, most recently launching our $6B IPO: https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/root-insurance-ipo-poised-to...
We're planning on leveraging that momentum to continue scaling rapidly and build something truly unique in the insurance industry. To do that, we're looking to bring on more exceptionally talented engineers and continue creating great teams around strong leaders and experienced problem solvers.
Our tech stack involves Ruby / Rails and Javascript / React Native. However, we're not only looking for people with experience in our stack, but rather, we're looking for experienced technologists with sound engineering fundamentals using any technology.
We're actively hiring in both Ohio and Illinois, where we have offices in Columbus and Chicago, respectively. Although we're all working remotely for the foreseeable future, we have the utmost intentions of returning to these offices sometime in 2021 when safe. We know we work best together in person, so we're searching for both experienced Engineers and Engineering Leaders who are looking to have a significant impact by building and leading a team from scratch, specifically in both locations.
If you're interested in learning more, feel free to apply at https://root.engineering/ or email us directly at enghiring@joinroot.com, and either Tim or Chris will respond to you promptly.

Blue Canvas | Senior Engineer | SF, Berlin, Remote (EU timezones)| https://bluecanvas.io
We make developer tools for low code programmers. We were shocked to learn that Salesforce devs and admins build impressively complex applications without any kind of source control or CI! Progression | London / UK | Backend (Ruby / Rails) | Fullstack (Rails / Vue / React) | Content & Community
At Progression we're helping everyone to build better, more meaningful careers by letting teams define career paths and employees measure themselves against them.
We think HR software is fundamentally broken for employees and managers.
As an employee, not only do HR tools give you more work to do, but they rarely deliver real value back. The endless goals, performance reviews, surveys and learning and development blah blah blah. Honestly, just let me do my work. What's more — when you leave, poof. All your data is gone. No record of what you've accomplished, or the projects you've worked on.
Meanwhile as a manager, you have nothing to help. You're stuck with whatever the HR team bought because they knocked a dollar off the price. Oh, and spreadsheets. Endless spreadsheets.
This has to change. The tools we use to design and build our careers must do a better job for us.
This summer we raised money from fantastic UK and US investors and are now starting to build a remote team of wonderful humans to help us with our vision to turn Progression into the definitive way for anyone to track their career.
